A group of canning companies from Bermeo, fishermen’s associations and the fishermen’s guild, together with other local entrepreneurs, decided to create Barna to provide an outlet for the surplus fish and by-products generated by canning factories, taking advantage of these materials and giving them another use in the animal feed sector. The technology used was German and state-of-the-art for the time.
Barna’s activity has been consolidated since its origins, and in the last decade it has made the leap from being a local company serving the local market to a Group with the aspiration of becoming a benchmark in the nutritional ingredients sector.
In 2009 we created Gestorganik. This transport company carries out the logistics of raw material supply for the Mundaka plant. Gestorganik has a fleet of isothermal and refrigerated lorries to preserve the quality and freshness of the materials used at the plant.
In 2014, Hadelca, a fish flour and oil company located in Santoña (Cantabria), was incorporated into Barna. This almost doubled our raw material processing capacity.
At the same time, in 2015 we opened our own laboratory at our Mundaka facilities to boost the quality and innovation activity we had been working on for years. Thanks to this strategic commitment, we can work with high quality standards in the process and develop new products to meet the changing shape of this market.
In June 2018, we incorporated Harinas de Andalucía, a company located in Tahivilla (Cadiz), into the Barna Group. The company was established in 1987 and in 2005 opened a state-of-the-art industrial facility with a fishmeal and fish oil factory.
With this incorporation we can serve the entire Iberian Peninsula to an optimal level, continuing to uphold our firm commitment to innovation and developing new products.
In 2020 we started production at our hydrolysates plant, allowing us to continue our firm commitment to innovation and developing new products. Advanced enzymatic techniques are used to obtain products that optimize the absorption of all peptides and amino acids. The high digestibility of these solutions makes them suitable to be included in high-performance diets and juvenile fish feeding.
In 2021 we acquired Tecmar. This transport company carries out the logistics of raw material supply for the Tahivilla plant. It has a fleet of isothermal and refrigerated lorries to preserve the quality and freshness of the material used in the Cadiz plant.
